Sewer Lateral Inspection

A sewer lateral inspection is required before the sale of any property within the Borough.

The sewer lateral is the underground pipe that connects your home’s plumbing to the Borough’s main sewer line, typically located beneath the roadway.

This inspection is mandated to help reduce inflow and infiltration into the system. The Borough pays for every gallon of water sent to the wastewater treatment plant, including stormwater that enters the sewer system through cracked pipes or illegal gutter and drain connections.

During the inspection, a licensed plumber inserts a camera into the lateral line to visually examine the interior for cracks, blockages, root intrusion, and other potential issues.

Once your application and payment are submitted, the Borough will forward the information to our designated third-party contractors:

  • C. Carlin Plumbing – for the camera inspection
  • BIU – for the certification

What Happens Next?

  • If your property passes the inspection and a certificate is issued, you may proceed with the property transfer.
  • If your property does not pass, necessary repairs must be completed before the sale, or funds to cover the work must be placed in escrow, with the repairs completed within 90 days of closing.

Fees

  • Full Inspection: $200, for camera and certification.
  • Partial Inspection: $100, for certification only.
  • Ex. Your contractor is completing repairs already and just needs an inspector to review before closing up the work.
    Estimated scheduling time is approximately two weeks, depending on contractor availability.
